The iPad and me

There’s a million posts around about the iPad today, and there will be a  million more tomorrow. My reaction is simply that I’ll be buying one, because I’m a geek, and that’s what I do.

As for whether it’s good or bad, game-breaking or Apple-breaker, that I’ve yet to learn.

I learned with the iPhone never to judge Apple products until I’d  had them in my sweaty paws. As a dyed-in-the-wool BlackBerry user, there was not way I was going to get an iPhone. Not a chance.

However, as a general nerd, I felt duty-bound to experience the interface – so I bought an iPod touch. Within two weeks, I’d bought an iPhone. Having used the interface  on the touch, there was simply no way that I was going to not have that lovely interface on my phone. It made my perfectly-good BlackBerry feel like something from the 19th Century.

So, till I actually have one in my hands, I’ll refrain from too much comment. People who judge Apple products by looking at the spec sheets simply don’t get it.

Idiot post of the day

Sadly, because I generally enjoy his writing, it’s from Robert Cringely:

“iPhone and Android will be here for the long haul with the question being which of Symbian, Palm, Windows Mobile, or Blackberry will die?”

Answer: None of them. There are more than 1.25 billion phones sold every year. Even a 1% market share would mean selling more phones than Apple did in 2008. Did Apple die in 2008, thanks to the lack of success of the iPhone? No.

People like Cringely simply do not understand the scale of the phone market worldwide. In 2008, more new phones were sold than the entire number of computers, old and new, that were in use.

Think about that for a second, Bob. Actually, think about it all day. Because then, you might understand that the phone market is not the same as the computer market.

Deathmatch rematch: BlackBerry versus iPhone 3.0 | Business Center | iPhone Central | Macworld

Galen Gruman compares the iPhone to Blackberry Bold and concludes that it’s time to retire the Blackberry. I’m not sure that he’s wrong, despite liking the Blackberry’s approach to email more.
The iPhone clearly has some issues, but for such a mature platform, the BlackBerry is surprisingly mediocre when it comes to e-mail. The iPhone makes it easier to read, send, and organize e-mails and contacts, but it falls short when it comes to zipped attachments. Both disappoint for calendar management.”

“Please don’t call this an iPhone killer”

The phrase “touch screen phone” is synonymous with “iPhone” in some people’s minds. That’s tough on the other phone manufacturers, but indicates the extent to which Apple has managed to dominate the market – if not in sales, at least in marketing.

But the Apple way of making a touchscreen phone, which focuses on the software above everything else, isn’t the only way. With the Arena, LG has concentrated on making a phone which offers excellent audio alongside high-quality pictures and a compact, easy-to-use phone. It’s not fair to compare it to the iPhone – it’s a very different kind of touch-screen.

Lewis Hamilton likes his BlackBerry Storm


Of course, I’d be surprised if he didn’t, given that Vodaphone are one of his team’s sponsors. But I’d be interested to hear from anyone who’s actually bought a Storm and used it for an extended period. While the initial reviews weren’t exactly stellar, I suspect it may be one of those phones which takes a little getting used to…

One interesting thing about this video: Lewis doesn’t really sound scripted. I have a feeling that the talented Mr Hamilton is a bit of a closet gadget freak…

UPDATE: Right on cue, James Kendrick gives a recap of his experience with the Storm, describing it as “a very capable smartphone”.
