The closest thing you can do to having IM open all the time on the iPHone is to use something like Beejive, which uses push notifications for alerting you to new IMs. And that&#039;s just such a kludge - and it just doesn&#039;t work nicely some of the time.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Ditto Twitter, and Facebook, and all those &quot;real time&quot; apps which we&#039;re all supposed to be doing these days. The iPhone isn&#039;t real time. It&#039;s designed for mono-tasking - and we just don&#039;t work like that anymore.&lt;/p&gt;
