Apple and Orange views on iPhone deal are like apples and oranges

French law requires that phones must be allowed to be unlocked after six months, which will, of course, potentially dent the revenue of Apple very badly.

Unlocks are legal from the first day in the US, so I’m not too sure that this will have a huge impact. Though I’d imagine that French consumer protection laws are more developed, and so the ability — or lack thereof — to have a two year contract (as in the US with AT&T) could be more damaging.

It’s not the legality that’s at issue – in most places, it’s legal to do an unlock at any time. What’s important about the French case (which I didn’t make clear enough) is that after six months, providers MUST provide an unlock if requested. Presumably, that would prevent Apple from doing anything to the phone which negated that official unlock, too, which would hit Apple’s profits badly.
