First the bad news: Microsoft is ditching Windows Media Player on the Mac. Actually, I’m not sure that is really bad news, given that WMP for Mac sucked. However, the good news is that it’s distributing for free Flip4Mac, which lets you view WMA in QuickTime anyway.
Incidentally, I’m not sure that one part of the Betanews story is correct:
Sources tell BetaNews that Microsoft has taken a different approach toward dealing with the Mac platform in recent months. Key developers in the Macintosh Business Unit at Microsoft have been reassigned elsewhere, such as the MSN unit, and the company has plans to slowly exit the consumer side of the business.
The reason I’m not sure about this is that I don’t think the WM client was actually made by the MacBU. I’m certain that I heard that, like the old Exchange client, WMP was made by its “home” business unit – ie the Windows Media team. I’m not 100% sure, but I think that’s right. Anyone know better?
