Apple is a very difficult company to understand from the outside. If you love the products, like I and many others do, it is really hard to accept the fact that these great products can come from a company that has some practices that many people might find distasteful. That doesn’t mean you have to stop loving the products, it just means that the world inside Apple might not be what you thought it was.
I actually couldn’t put it better myself. There are far too many uses around, who because Apple produces fantastic machinery, think that Apple can itself do no wrong. There are far too many people around who think that because Apple does wonderful designs, we have the right to do what it wants in terms of business practices. The truth is more complex, as it usually is. Apple is a company that is capable of wonderful achievements, but like all companies, it has a darker side.
Apple is no more good or evil as the company than Microsoft. It simply makes better products.
Neowin has an excellent review of the Toshiba m200 Tablet PC. the review comes out very favourably, and in the UK the m200 comes with a better specification than the model reviewed. Although I’ve been very happy with my tablet, if I was buying one tomorrow I would definitely look at the Toshiba.
There’s a new NewsGator Outlook Edition coming, and it’s just about to go into beta.
The next version of NewsGator Outlook edition will go into beta testing sometime next week, and we’re soliciting folks who would like to help with the beta program. I can’t yet post the complete feature list, but it’s mostly about synchronization. If you think back to all of the comments that have been made over the last year about NewsGator’s sync system (doesn’t sync read/unread status to Outlook, stuff deleted online after I download, etc.), they’ve all been addressed. Ok, maybe not ALL, because I know someone’s going to scour the forums for something we didn’t implement…but pretty much all of the major items have been addressed. This is an entirely new synchronization system, built on the new API’s I talked about a while back…and I can tell you, after using it for a while, it rocks.
So anyway, if you’d like to participate in the beta, shoot me a note. We’re going to limit the size, and we’re also going to ramp it up gradually; so if you send me a note and I don’t get back to you right away, don’t worry – I haven’t forgotten you!
At the moment, I’m using FeedDemon – but that’s mainly because I’m using Thunderbird rather than Outlook, thanks to Outlook’s occasional sluggish behaviour. NewsGator is one of the applications that drags me back to Outlook, along with the Getting Things Done plug in.
