This morning, Tony Blair claimed

This morning, Tony Blair claimed that two British soldiers had been executed by the Iraqis. When asked how he knew this for sure, Blair said “because of the circumstances we know.” That fairly pathetic “justification” should have been enough to tip off the wise reader that Blair was talking rubbish, but thankfully British news organisations followed it up.
The Daily Mirror was first out of the trap. Talking to one of the deceased soldier’s sisters, they found that “his Colonel told us he was not executed we just can’t understand why people are lying.” Next, we find on BBC News that Blair is backtracking somewhat – now the soldiers only “may” have been executed. Surprise!
